If Irom Sharmila dies, each of you journalist would be responsible as you did not do your duty....."

While the national media has remained apathetic to the plight of Irom Sharmila in Manipur who has been fasting for ten years and has been force fed by the government, the same media is lapping up every bit of development from Anna’s week-long fast.

Posted/Updated Thursday, Aug 25 15:27:12, 2011

It’s an odd time of the year for the national media to remember the Iron Lady of Manipur. Irom Chanu Sharmila usually figures in the news around March every year when she is ceremoniously released from judicial custody and then rearrested after 24 hours on charges of attempted suicide. She is rearrested because she refuses to budge and break her fast demanding repeal of the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958. She has been on fast since November 2000.

Well, she was invited by Team Anna to join in his over week-long fast against corruption and Sharmila’s decade-long fast managed to grab national headlines yet again. “Anna and all of us appeal to you to lend us your support in letter and spirit and invite you to share in our experience,” key member of Team Anna, Arvind Kejriwal’s letter stated. Expressing her solidarity with Anna’s campaign, Sharmila responded, “My humble suggestion is if you feel seriously, please try to reach the concerned legislators to let me go free, like you, to join your crusade to root out corruption, which is the root of all evils. Or you can come to Manipur, the most corruption-affected region in the world,” Sharmila said in a letter to Team Anna.

This interaction was picked up by the national media. HindustanTimes headlines ran, “Irom Sharmila regrets not being able to join Anna” and Economic Times stated, “Irom Sharmila supports Anna’s campaign”. The Times of India stated, “Many Anna Hazare critics have been invoking Sharmila's case to argue that the government was indifferent to the latter's cause but capitulating to the "blackmailing tactics" of the former. Some critics of the anti-corruption movement have also questioned the conscience of Anna's middle class supporters for being apathetic to Sharmila's indefinite fast.”

The history of the land, the persona of Hazare and Sharmila, the course through which the anti-corruption campaign and the anti-AFSPA protest has traversed, are unique in their own ways and mixing them up would only make a cocktail for the so called mainstream media to gloss over. Sharmila's aura has been generated not by any media coverage nor by support or solidarity to her cause but by her sheer will and determination. There is no reason why she should reach out for any crutch at this moment of her campaign. This is her strength. Diluting it would be criminal."

The Kangla Online, another portal from Manipur quoted an activist from Just Peace Foundation who support Sharmila’s cause. The activist stated, “To me both have similar causes. Anna fights for a corruption free society while Sharmila struggles for the right to life”. Another Imphal newspaper, Hueiyen Lanpao, said: “It (the invite) can be interpreted as mischievous, callous and patronizing, which smacks of insincerity and total lack of knowledge of the ground reality of Sharmila’s struggle in Manipur.”

Anna Hazare's invitation to Sharmila is not only an insult to the intelligence and resolve of the indomitable lady, but also to the intelligence of the knowing public of this state. Hueiyen Lanpaofurther criticised the invitation stating, "It is a cheap publicity stunt to garner support from any and all quarters. Therefore Anna Hazare should stop bothering Irom Sharmila, their causes are different. Least of all he should realize that Irom Sharmila has been nose fed forcibly for nearly eleven years. She is hardly in a condition to join his political circus."

The Editor of Imphal Free Press, Pradip Phanjoubam in a poignant write-up states, “Every television network went gaga over Hazare but have spared barely a thought for Sharmila. This contrast highlights a number of grave issues. Above all, it demonstrates the deep disparity that exists between the concerns of the North-eastern states and the rest of the country. Who can now say, with any justice, that the vexing nationalistic problems in the North-east have no deeper basis than lack of development? This apart, the emerging scenario of the nation’s concern over Hazare’s hunger strike should have made it clear that at the root of the North-east problem is also an exclusion of the region from the national psyche.”

Civil rights activists have expressed their cynicism to this invitation to Sharmila. Singhajit Singh, a civil rights campaigner and elder brother of Sharmila was seen voicing his comments on a local satellite channel. He said, “This is nothing but racial discrimination. See how Anna's fast has hogged media headlines and see our very own Irom fasting for nearly 11 years. If Anna was born in Manipur and Sharmila born in New Delhi, things would have been just the reverse. For the mainstream media, northeast or things happening in the northeast hardly excites them”.

A few local channels were seen having a panel discussion on whether the national media gives the region its due and whether Anna’s fast has been blown out of proportion as compared to Sharmila. The Telegraph’s headline ran “All ears for Hazare, deaf to Sharmila’s crusade” They quoted Babloo Loitongbam, director of Human Rights Alert, Manipur who said, “When Anna Hazare went on hunger strike for a couple of days the whole country came out in support and even Parliament was rocked. Sharmila is fasting for more than 10 years seeking the right to life and still Parliament remains silent and the mainland keeps mum. This is because Sharmila belongs to the Northeast.”
NETV's Manipur bureau put up a touching story on Irom Sharmila's cause. They stated that for the people of Manipur, where right to life is an every day struggle, corruption becomes a secondary issue. The show quoted Irom Sharmila as saying, "I want to tell the people of India that if Mahatma Gandhi would have been alive today, he would have launched a campaign against the AFSPA." The show which recounted the traumatic struggle of Sharmila ended with a poignant line, "If Sharmila dies, each of you journalist would be responsible as you did not do your duty....."
Riding on the Anna wave, Sharmila has also managed to garner support from netizens on her struggle. The Deccan Chronicle ran a story on how netizens are using facebook and twitter to support Sharmila. “The lack of government response convinced Irom Sharmila, then 28, to act. On the evening of Nov 4, after taking blessings from her mother, she launched her hunger strike against the wider problems of AFSPA. In due course she extended the scope of her demand to all regions of India's northeast where AFSPA has been imposed,” says the Facebook page on Sharmila.

Hina Rabani Khar - foreign minister of Pakistan.

After Hina Rabani khar was selected as the foreign minister of Pakistan she is the topic of every talk show in Pakistan, Yes there is no denying the fact that She is beautiful and talented but she is no match for those 80year old ministers that have the experience that equals her age. Lets leave this over here as this is not the topic we are going to discuss, we will discuss this issue in future . Let us come to the topic Hina Rabbani khar showed her property to the election commission of Pakistan which was 1.35 crore. Pakistani rupees,and she told that she don't have a car, can u imagine a property of 1.35 crore without a car? Hina Rabbani khar on her visit to India dressed herself beautifully as on aired by many Indian channels as a "Modal".but on the other side they also disclosed the prices of her jewelry,handbag,glasses,shoes and earrings.
According to Pakistani media the price of her handbag was 7 lack rupees but Indian media told that the price of that handbag was actually Rs 35,00000.
Glasses=50,000
Neck less =70,0000
Earnings=75,000
Shoes=45,000
This proves a very simple thing that a super luxury car is worth a handbag of Hina Rabbani Khar. Our corrupt leaders are doing as much as they can to gather as much money as they can. They really don't care that this money belongs to the people of Pakistan, not them. On the last visit of our president Zardari to England he stayed at the royal suit in England, the price of royal suit in England for one night is 10,00000. He spend around 65million rupees on his last visit to England,why he went to England? To beg money and he spend more money there on his stay then he got. We can just pray to God to help us, and show these leaches the straight path. Oh Allah save Pakistan.

The actor bares it all for a scene in his upcoming movie, 'Chitkabrey'

Filmmakers in Bollywood have made several actors strip their clothes. After John Abraham in 'New York'and Neil Nitin Mukesh in 'Jail', it is now time for Ravi Kissen. However, Ravi was not too comfortable going nude in front of the camera.
He says, 'I have done a nude scene in 'Chitkabrey'but initially I did not want to do it. I also had a long debate with the director as I was not at all comfortable. I said it was a stupid idea to go nude. But the director tried hard to convince me and later I had to give in. If they would not have forced me so much, I would not have done it.'Chitkabrey'also has many bold scenes by Akshara Gauda, Khushboo Gupta and Sweetlana Manolyo. Speaking about the movie he says, 'The concept is very bold. It is about ragging which happens in almost every educational institution. The story is about a boy who is ragged in a very bad manner in his college.
As a result, his career, life, family, everything is destroyed. Later on he comes back to take revenge but in a very different and bold way.'Ravi became more of a known face after being a Bhojpuri star and later on participating in the reality show 'Bigg Boss'. As he entered Bollywood, Ravi was seen playing significant roles in several Hindi movies like 'Luck', 'Raavan'and 'Tanu Weds Manu'. But this break in Bollywood was not without a struggle. He says. 'Initially I did not get much recognition or work in Bollywood.
I had to struggle a lot because I was from a middle class family. When I went back to Bhojpuri movies and became a superstar there, I started getting more work here.'Speaking about his upcoming projects the actor says, 'Now I have many movies in hand like 'Zila Ghaziabad'which has a nice story. It portrays the true and brighter side of Benaras in six different ways. Normally in Bollywood no one must have seen such a movie which actually shows the city in a positive light. Also I am doing 'Agent Vinod'and many more after that.'

I’m much better endowed than the picture suggests,” lashes out an angry Ravi Kishan whose nude act pictures from a non-descript film ‘Chitkabrey’ has been circulated in the media.

Anna's men will ask you to bunk work today.

Varun Singh

India Against Corruption volunteers will fan out across the city’s railway stations today to encourage office- goers to take a day off and support Anna and the cause of the Jan Lokpal Bill instead
ANNA Hazare’s supporters in the city are all set to give you what some would term the perfect excuse to skip going to work today.
Several teams of India Against Corruption ( IAC), Team Anna’s organisation which is working for the passage of a comprehensive Lokpal Bill, will fan out across railway stations and encourage office goers to bunk work for a day to show solidarity with the cause.
Mayank Gandhi, IAC’s Mumbai coordinator, said, “ We are going ahead with our plan of standing outside railway stations and convincing people to show solidarity with the cause by not attending offices and supporting the protest instead.” Gandhi said that after talking to people at the stations, volunteers will walk towards Azad Maidan to protest there and even court arrest if need be. Asked about the number of people participating in the protest, he said the movement was gaining traction by the hour and it would be difficult to put a number.
“ There were a total of 30 events that we had planned in the city on Monday. In my area itself, however, I saw more than four protests being carried out, which indicates that people who are not directly associated with the IAC are also expressing their displeasure with the current state of affairs. Thus, even I can’t put a figure to the number of people who will be gathering,” said Gandhi. More than 75,000 people from the city have registered as volunteers with the IAC. “ Apart from the common public, taxi, trade and retailer unions and many others have assured us of their support.
They will shut work on August 16 to support us. We are clear on one thing, however — no one is going to force anybody to participate in the protest,” said Naresh Thakur, youth coordinator for IAC. Gandhi, however, said that all plans would be dropped and Anna supporters would simply court arrest if Anna is arrested in Delhi today.
“ If Anna is arrested, we won’t ask for people’s support as planned. We will directly march to Azad Maidan and court arrest.” Police preparation Deputy Commissioner of Police Nisar Tamboli said, “ We have not received any written letter seeking permission to hold protests anywhere in the city — including at Azad Maidan.
any illegal protest is carried out, the protestors will be arrested.” A member from IAC’s media cell, however, told MiD DAY that they have submitted written request for permission for the Azad Maidan protest the Azad Maidan police station. “ We haven’t, however, received permission for it yet,” he said.
